Product Description
Athletes have different needs than the typical yogi. They come to the practice with more tightness from hours spent training, little time for lengthy sessions, and at the height of the season they often abandon yoga classes altogether for demanding sport-specific training. In this accessible guide, yoga teacher Sage Rountree makes it easy for athletes to reap the benefits of the practice year-round. Designed to complement a rigorous training schedule, the book includes quick, five-minute warm-ups to prepare for daily workouts; strength sessions for the off-season and base periods; flexibility sessions as training grows more demanding, including 20-minute flexibility routines to follow workouts; and focus sessions incorporating breath exercises and meditation to improve restoration and sharpen mental toughness for competition. A spiral binding makes it easy to progress through each routine, and attractive color photographs fluidly detail every pose. Tips to simplify trickier poses or vary the routine from one session to the next are included.

Gets into all of the tight spots July 10, 2009 B. L. Briggs (Raleigh) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I wasn't sure I would want to do yoga from a book, but the pictures are clear and concise and having some moderate yoga experience helps. But being a book I can carry it to any place in the house to get some quiet yoga time.
I have been doing a yoga video to try to stretch out my tight hips and lower back, it was good overall but it wasn't helping where I needed it.
This book has very specific flows for post swim, post bike and post run workouts that really target those tight spots. They even worked on some spots I didn't realize were tight! Especially my hamstrings and my achilles. I am now considering buying the companion video.
Best Yoga Book December 10, 2009 M. Wolfe (Dublin, OH) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This has to be the best book on yoga I've come across in years. When I'm doing an activity like yoga, I really don't want to read long prose on how to do something. I just want to see it, then do it. And that's exactly how this book is presented. There's a brief guide for absolute beginners at the beginning, a quick guide to things you might need - such as, how to pick a good mat - but then it goes into page after page of image sequences about poses (5-10 minutes), then a section towards the end on full routines that can take an hour (or more). It's a great mix&match guide to build your own routines, or use theirs, depending on your needs and skill and time restraints. It also has a spiral binding which is great to just lay open when you're trying things out. I definitely recommend this to athletes and non-athletes like myself.

yoga without the chanting October 10, 2009 dellasgrl (usa) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great book, with vibrant photos and well written directions. Spiral binding makes book easy to use while practicing the movements. Yoga without the chanting which I find distracting. Recommended to friends already!
quick reference guide January 23, 2010 AJ (Twin Cities) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great as a quick reference guide if you already know yoga. I am not a triathlete, but I bike, swim and run and was finding my muscles so tight after these activities. This helped me to quickly reference those poses particularly helpful for those activities to stretch, relieve muscle tightness, and build strength. I have practiced and taught yoga for years and have tons of yoga books, but this is my go-to guide for quick reference.
