5 out of 5 stars An Approachable Avalanche   July 27, 2010
Another Literary One
Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Tremper is all that I hoped it would be and more. I have perused a number of avalanche texts over the years, and I have found many to read like textbooks. Tremper's approach is more accessible and yet not condescending. He uses apt analogies and down-to-Earth examples that resonate with the recreational outdoorsman or outdoorswoman. There are abundant graphs, illustrations, and images that support and enrich Tremper's reasoned presentation. His tone is one of respectful caution, perhaps borne of his losing friends and colleagues to avalanches - a reality that he mentions repeatedly. If all I learn from this book is that sobering fact then it was money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Best primer for avalanche courses and safety   July 11, 2010
L. Lieb (Denver, CO)
I picked this book up on my own and found it to be the best handbook on the subject. It is an excellent primer on avalanches including: physical characteristics, human factors, and of course rescue. I think this book did a far better job than others of emphasizing how dangerous avalanches can be, and if nothing else hammering home the point of why you don't want to get caught in an avalanche.

I was assigned Snow Sense: A Guide to Evaluating Snow Avalanche Hazardfor an avalanche course and did find this book to be a good starting point. However, I did not find it be quite as was helpful, as Tremper's book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect companion to a level 1 Avy class   October 8, 2009
Ben (New York, NY United States)
This is a phenomenal book. Clear, engaging, accessible, and thorough. Tremper helps you understand the science of avalanches, points out the key takeaways, and gives you decision-making criteria that statistics support. Written with a touch of humor to keep you on your toes if you're not a meteorologist. His first-hand experiences give this book all the street cred it needs, and then some.

I'm glad I waited till after my three day avy class to read this because it helps a lot to have been in a snow pit, seen a fracture line, and learned the basic foundations already- it was still somewhat tangible when I began reading. That said, this book is the absolute necessary second half to that field education. I intend to reread it or reread my highlighted notes before every season.

5 out of 5 stars excellent technical text   August 15, 2009
Chris Williams (Australia)
Only up to page 128 the moment, but I find this to be an excellent text. One potential drawback, for those of us in the southern hemishpere (i'm in Australia), beginners like me are not too sure of its relevance here or in New Zealand, where I imagine the climates are vastly different to that of Canada and the US.
